About

David Flood is an Irish image-maker, educator, and doctoral researcher based in Finland. His work sits between visual culture, photography, philosophy of technology, and human geography, with a particular interest in how landscapes are understood through image-making practices.

He is currently completing a PhD at the University of Helsinki titled Being-with the Landscape: Understanding the Landscape through Image-making Practices. His research examines how smartphone image-making, visual habits, and technological mediations shape contemporary experiences of landscape. Alongside his research, he teaches photography, digital imaging, visual culture, visual research methods, and interdisciplinary social science courses on technology and society in Finland and Ireland.

Working primarily through photography, Flood’s practice extends across moving image, drawing, and mixed media. His work has been presented in exhibitions, talks, and collaborative projects in Ireland, Finland, Portugal, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain, the UK, and the US. He has received support for his research and artistic work from the University of Helsinki, the City of Helsinki, the City of Espoo, Tipperary County Council, and Culture Moves Europe (EU cultural funding).

For current research, publications, and talks, see the Research page.
